A Himalayan glacier falls on a river, bursting open the Rishiganga Hydroelectric Project dam in Uttarakhand, India. Villages in the surrounding area have been safely evacuated, but the search for possible missing persons caught in the floodwater is still ongoing. According to a witness, there was no time to sound the alarm due to the speed of the avalanche of rocks and water down the Dhauliganga river. Uttarakhand police reported that the incident happened at around 11:00 a.m. Indian local time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expresses his sympathy and wrote on Twitter, “India stands with Uttarakhand and the nation prays for everyone’s safety there.”

The flash flood along the Dhauliganga river damaged another power project in the Tapovan area. One of the witnesses compared the incident to a Bollywood movie scene. The main flood danger has already passed according to authorities, but the riverside areas of the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh are put on high alert for flooding. Rescue efforts and investigation of the incident are still ongoing.
