A smartwatch by Facebook is currently in the works and is intended to be sold by next year according to a report from The Information. The Android-based smartwatch is said to have messaging, health, and fitness features. Aside from this, Facebook is also working to have its own operating system. It was not stated in the report if Facebook created the device to run Google’s Wear OS. Facebook has not expressed interest in wellness and fitness devices; however, the company has records of wearables such as virtual reality (VR) headsets.

The new smartwatch is created as Facebook’s effort to expand its consumer hardware. Facebook has more than 6,000 employees working on experimental initiatives under its Reality Labs Division. The device will be included in the company’s collection of other wearable devices, such as Facebook’s Oculus VR headsets and Portal video chat. Furthermore, the company is working on Ray-Ban smart glasses scheduled to come out later this year, as well as Project Aria, a research project for augmented reality (AR) glasses.
