The colorful Autumn leaves in Japan known as “koyo” show up around mid-November to early December. The country is filled with parks and gardens perfect for admiring the fall atmosphere. Here are some of the wonderful places to see koyo in and around Japan’s capital, Tokyo.

• Yoyogi Park
Just a few steps from Harajuku Station in central Tokyo, Yoyogi Park is a perfect choice. It’s one of the largest parks in the capital and is also near the Meiji Shrine. Yoyogi Park is great to spend an afternoon while adoring the koyo, with its acres of trees, trails, water features, and flowers.

• Icho Namiki Avenue
Icho Namiki Avenue, located in Tokyo’s downtown area, has magnificent gingko trees that bloom from late November to early December. It is perfect for a walk, but you can also sit back, relax, and eat at the Royal Garden Cafe while feasting your eyes on beautiful autumn leaves.

• Rikugien Gardens
One of the oldest parks in Tokyo, Rikugien was built in the early 1700s and restored in 1878. It’s lit up with illumination displays. An entrance fee of ¥300 is required to enter the garden.
