In commemoration of the 120th anniversary of Labor Day in the Philipines, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has organized job and business fairs in various locations nationwide on May 1, 2022. 12,000 local and overseas job vacancies are now available for job seekers. This year’s Labor Day tagline is Jobs 2022: Create, Sustain, Transform.

In line with the Labor Day celebrations, DOLE has also inaugurated the Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Hospital in San Fernando, Pampanga. All OFWs and their legal dependents will be treated in the 100-bed hospital facility for free, according to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III. Labor Day (Araw ng Manggagawa) was first observed in the Philippines on May 1, 1903, when thousands of workers marched from Plaza Moriones in Tondo to the Malacañang Palace, lobbying for fairer working conditions from the then American-led government. On April 8, 1908, the Philippine Assembly officially declared the first of May a national holiday. Also known as International Workers’ Day, Labor Day is also observed in other countries like Italy, France, and China on May 1.
