Long ago, the people who lived in the beach town of Mutriku benefited from the treasures of the ocean. Now, they are making use of its amazing skills and powers.

After beginning as a small fishing community more than 800 years ago, Mutriku became a wealthy port that was home to many generations of fishermen, traders, shipbuilders, and whalers. The first industrial wave power plant in Europe was created in the town in 2011 with the construction of the Mutriku Wave Energy Plant. A total of 250 homes may be powered by the electricity produced by the 16 turbines at the plant, which also prevents 600 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere annually.

Even though global demands may have changed, Basques have always been able to benefit from the sea. For the Mutrikuarra, water has always been, continues to be, and will always be an important part of life.
