Last March 17, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced that they will no longer use the Greek alphabet in naming tropical storms. “The Greek alphabet will never be used again as it was distracting and confusing“, the organization tweeted. According to the WMO, it may be confusing because it takes attention away from danger and storm warnings. Greek letters were used as backups once all the names of the storms on the list were used. It will be replaced by a secondary list of names that uses the same rules as the main Atlantic hurricane season naming list, except the letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z.
