Many cities around the world still experience severe traffic jams. In an effort to reduce traffic, USky Transport has come up with driverless high-speed pods that can help cities around the world. The pods are still in the testing phase in Sharjah, a city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Usky’s pods can be compared to monorails and cable cars but they offer cabins that are designed for both shorter trips and longer distances, according to Stephanie Haag, an associate partner at McKinsey & Company. Passengers can expect the interior to look like a first-class airline with floor-to-ceiling windows, mood lighting, and music. The vehicle can carry up to four passengers. USky transport wants to make way for greenery and public leisure spaces. The futuristic pods can travel up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour. USky says the system uses fewer structural materials that can be helpful to the environment. It costs around 10 million which is a lot cheaper than one kilometer of a subway which can cost up to $150 million. Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO of Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, has expressed his hope for the pods to boost the emirate’s plan of becoming a futuristic hub.
Once the network becomes fully operational in 2024, it could carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour. Sky pods in Sharjah are yet another example of the power of technology and how ideas can shape the world.
