President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has allowed the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) and city leaders to put Metro Manila under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) from August 6 to 20, 2021, with the goal to fight the spread of the COVID-19 Delta strain. Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced last July 30 that the decision was ‘painful‘ but very important. Roque added that financial help would most likely be given to affected communities. The ongoing COVID-19 vaccinations in the capital, on the other hand, will continue, Roque explained. The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) explained that if health processes would not be strictly followed, the Delta strain could increase Metro Manila’s daily new COVID-19 cases to up to 11,000 by the end of September. Under the ECQ, only the most needed services and shops are allowed to open, such as hospitals, groceries, pharmacies, and delivery services.
