Nearly 4,000 beagles are looking for new homes after one of the greatest dog rescue operations in US history. “… it’s going to take 60 days to get all of these animals out, and working with our shelter and rescue partners across the country, working with them to get these dogs eventually into ever-loving homes,” Humane Society head Kitty Block said. 200 of the dogs were adopted into new homes in southern California, but the others were spread out across the US. Virginia state senator Bill Stanley told a news organization that the rescue was the result of a long battle. “I bought two of those Envigo beagles back in 2020 and 2021… Those beagles I bought because I did not want them to be experimented on. And now I know that their brothers and sisters are not going to be experimented on either,” says Stanley.
The dogs were being bred in Virginia by a company that later sold them to testing facilities for drugs. Due to violations of animal laws, the company was later forced to close, and organizations are now trying to find the dogs new homes. Inspectors found that some dogs were not receiving veterinary care but were being put to death for diseases that were easily treatable. Before being made available for adoption, the beagles are getting medical examinations and vaccinations.
