Campaign groups and health advocates have expressed concerns regarding the excessive use of antibiotics in animals, such as cows and pigs, particularly in the context of supplying food to schools and hospitals in the UK. The misuse of antibiotics not only impacts animal welfare but also poses a significant threat to human health due to the development of antibiotic resistance. This issue is of global importance as antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” are becoming increasingly prevalent. The Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics scrutinized the practices of 10 major UK caterers that provide food to institutions like hospitals and schools. Their findings revealed that these caterers lack stringent regulations on antibiotic use in the animals from which they source their food. Even though there are existing guidelines, they are voluntary, allowing caterers to choose whether or not to adhere to them. To address this critical problem, the government must exercise its influence to promote and enforce more robust rules governing antibiotic use in these caterers, ensuring the effectiveness of these vital medicines in maintaining public health.

The issue here is the excessive use of antibiotics in farm animals, which threatens our ability to fight infections effectively. Despite existing regulations, they’re not enforced, causing concern. A global effort aims to reduce antibiotic use in both human medicine and farming. The goal is to establish strict rules for animal and human antibiotic use. To tackle this issue, the government, caterers, and suppliers must work together to set a global example in the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, protecting both animals and people. Collective action is crucial.
