Chinese companies are using ultraviolet (UV) light to sanitize public vehicles and elevators from coronavirus. Yanggao, Shanghai’s public transport company has changed a regular room into a UV light disinfecting area for public vehicles. It has also made the process quick by dropping down the procedure from 40 minutes to five. The marketing supervision bureau in southern Guangdong province talks about a smart UV elevator purification system that is used to remove the virus residue. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that UV lamps should not be used to remove viruses from the hands or other parts of the body, as UV light can cause skin injury. According to health experts, UV lamps are not generally used to clean public areas but it could be efficient when the plan is done well. Paul Tambyah, president of the Asia Pacific Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infection, said that UV disinfection is effective but needs to be used with care as the light can cause skin cancer.
