Major banks in Australia and US airlines were hit by online shutdowns last Thursday, June 17. The shutdowns started at about 2:17 p.m. Sydney time that lasted for an hour. Aside from Australia and American, Delta, United, and Southwest Airlines, other businesses around the world were also affected such as banks in New Zealand and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. A spokesperson for Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) said the issue was caused by an external factor. The businesses affected use the same online service by US tech-provider Akamai. “Our priority is restoring service as quickly as possible. We will share additional information as it becomes available,” a spokesperson from Akamai said.
